Have you always wanted to write poetry but felt a bit fearful of how to start? Perhaps you’re already a poet, but you’re stuck in a stylistic rut?

Suji invites you to t
hink of a poem as if you were building a house, or shooting a film. She asks what would you build first, or last? Where would you point the camera first? Which details would you zoom into for a close-up?

In this day masterclass led by Writer-in-Residence Suji Kwock Kim, participants will use the spaces immediately around as inspiration. You will read and discuss poems set in familiar spaces like a room, house, garden, park, city or landscape, before writing your own.

Any “place”
provides a host of concrete details and images and strong feelings that you can draw on; Suji will help you choose the most striking and unexpected ones and allow the imagery to carry out the emotional action of your poem. This room/house/city/place may be literal or imaginary, but if imaginary, Suji will help you bring a convincing reality to your writing, inspired by Marianne Moore's description of poems as “imaginary gardens with real toads in them.”

If you’re new to poetry, or wondering if you might get stuck, don’t worry! This technique lends itself well to beginners and poets returning to their craft.
