Whether you are writing fiction or non-fiction, you will probably find yourself grappling with the themes of place and identity. How, precisely, can you write people and place without doing either a disservice?

Although she didn’t set out to write a book about identity and belonging, Cymru (Wales), cymreictod (Welshness) and her relationship to them, are themes which weave throughout Julie Brominicks’ The Edge of Cymru.

The attention this provoked post-publication - particularly Julie's decision to use Welsh place names throughout - has encouraged her to analyse the reasons behind her instinctive writing choices, and the struggle to reconcile nationality with issues such as good global citizenship and even romanticism.

And now she's ready to offer guidance to other writers working on the question of capturing Cymru - or any other complex blend of landscape and culture in this masterclass, as an insider or in-comer.

Julie Brominicks worked as an educator at the Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth, where she still lives off-grid, before becoming a full time writer. She is a regular contributor to BBC Countryfile Magazine, writing on environmental subjects, and her work has featured in publications like Natur Cymru and Country Walking Magazine. Her first book The Edge of Cymru was published by Seren in late 2022.
