Eminent Victorian Artists: Julia Margaret Cameron

7.30pm

BOOKING FOR THIS EVENT IS CLOSED.

The final installment in a short lecture series, showcasing some of the greatest artistic genius of the Victorian period, with Adrian Sumner. All proceeds to Gladstone's Living Heritage Project.

Not a painter but a photographer, and highly influential in the ‘pictorial’ style, Julia Margaret Cameron was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite painters and created a unique, signature style which was unmistakably hers. Because she moved in society circles she was able to gain access to 'celebrity' sitters such as Alfred Lord Tennyson, Sir John Herschel, even Alice Liddell, and produce informal portraits of which no other photographer would have been capable. A unique voice in British photography, and indeed in photographic history, Cameron has only recently begun to reach a wider audience, and to gain the universal recognition she deserves.

Adrian Sumner has worked as an Illustrator, Arts Development Officer and Lecturer in various academic and public institutions including NADFAS. Latterly he was Arts Development Officer for Cheshire West and Chester Council, with a particular interest in Visual Arts. Currently he divides his time between organising study weekends in Britain, cruise ship lectures, painting and exhibiting, and delivering study days and single lectures in Britain and abroad. He has lectured in the History of Art for the University of Liverpool and a variety of groups and societies, to many thousands of people over a period of 20 years.

Tickets are priced at £12 or £23.95 with dinner (2 courses, including tea / coffee).
