Gladstone’s Library’s Graduate Work Experience programme can help you gain the experience you need.
The traditional route to a career in librarianship, archives, or museum studies in the UK is:
However, applicants to an MA or Traineeship often find themselves faced with a request for evidence of ‘substantial’ or ‘a year of’ work experience. Anyone looking to secure the necessary hours might consider the Gladstone’s Library Work Experience programme. The purpose of the programme is to help those at the start of their careers secure the necessary work experience required to gain formal training or qualifications in the relevant areas.
The traineeship experience is only open to those looking to secure places on post-graduate qualifications in librarianship, archives or marketing, or those looking to secure a year-long graduate Traineeship in these areas. We regret that the positions cannot be offered to anyone else.
This programme has been successfully running for a number of years at Gladstone's Library. Those who have successfully completed placements have gone on to secure places at Buckingham Palace, the Bodleian Library and the University of Liverpool amongst others.
