Gladstone 200 Campaign
Gladstone 200 Campaign
The Gladstone 200 Campaign was launched in 2009 as part of the nationwide celebrations to mark the bicentenary of the birth of William Gladstone.
We wanted to commemorate this anniversary in a way that was suitably ‘Gladstonian’. The Trustees felt that, if Gladstone were alive today, one of his chief concerns would be the lack of understanding between Muslims and Christians. They, therefore, decided that one of the main aims of the Gladstone 200 Campaign would be to create a new Reading Room with a special focus on Islamic faith and culture.
An area within the existing building has been designated for this purpose. This exciting new facility, the House of Wisdom, will be officially opened later this year. Like the rest of the collection, the books in this new Reading Room will be freely available to all. They will complement the courses that are now a regular part of our annual programme and will help to stimulate debate about and interest in contemporary interfaith issues, in particular those affecting Christians and Muslims.
Over the last two years, the Library has worked closely with the Church in Wales, Muslim Council of Wales and Welsh Centre for International Affairs, participating in the ground-breaking project ‘Challenges for the Future’ as it seeks to find a common voice on issues across the diversity of our backgrounds and worldviews, our religious teachings and faith.
Another important phase of the Gladstone 200 Campaign was completed in January 2011 with the refurbishment of eleven bedrooms to include en-suite facilities.
Further information about the Campaign and our future fundraising activities will appear here in due course.
